The Government Affairs Assistant/Manager, under the direct supervision of the Director of Government Affairs, serves as the state (assigned states) legislative advocate for the design industry in order to fulfill ASID's mission. The Government Affairs Assistant/Manager assists the Director in developing and implementing programs to support the interior design profession and must develop an in-depth understanding of several key state issues including but not limited to: Practice legislation, state taxation, small business.

Government Affairs

1. For assigned states develop and maintain effective relationships with key state elected officials, their staff, and other government officials (as assigned by state).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbent should have 1-2 years of experience in hands-on management of legislative activities and the ability to learn the process for preparation of issue statements, papers, testimony, grassroots, campaigns, and meetings. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Knowledge of, and/or experience in building policy is preferred. Incumbent must hold a bachelors degree from an accredited institution in political science, communication or a related field.

POSITION SUMMARY

5) Director of Business Development – Grassroots and Political Communications
American Directions Group (ADG),
formerly The Clinton Group and CCI, a political communications and data collection firm specializing in direct contact strategies for electoral, legislative and corporate campaigns, seeks a Director of Business Development (Sales).

The Director will be responsible for developing new business and managing existing client business at the national, state and local levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop new and build upon existing relationships with advocacy groups, public affairs firms, trade associations, non-profit organizations, corporations, utilities and insurance companies, in order to strategically position ADG in upcoming grassroots programs, ballot initiatives, and issue referendums.
• Secure contracts and coordinate electoral voter contact programs with Democratic candidates and campaigns.

6) Advocate
The North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN)
was established as the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology in 1973. There are now more than 1400 members in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The organization is a 501 (c) 3 with a mission of advancing the understanding of normal development, physiology and pathophysiology of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver in children, improving the quality of care by fostering the dissemination of this knowledge through scientific meetings, professional/ public education and policy development, and serving as an effective voice for members and the profession. The objectives of the organization are to improve digestive health and nutrition of children worldwide, foster dialogue and research on issues impacting the pediatric GI patient and family, to provide opportunities for clinicians and researchers to gain knowledge in the field, and to disseminate existing scientific information that will improve care and practice.

Purpose of the RFP

NASPGHAN currently has a need for a Washington Representative to partner with staff and physician members of the NASPGHAN Executive Council and the Public Affairs and Advocacy Committee (PAAC) to promote an agenda that includes advocacy for the needs of our patients and advocacy for the needs of the physician-clinicians and researchers in the field. The role of the representative/lobbyist will be to advise, develop, recommend and implement strategy for the purpose of advancing the PAAC’s approved agenda and otherwise represent the interests of NASPGHAN before the US Congress, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other regulatory agencies. The representative will be charged with remaining current with the advocacy activities of other organizations with similar interests in general pediatrics and adult gastroenterology by establishing close collaborations with their Washington staffs. These organizations include, but are not limited to, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). The representative will be responsible to the President/Executive Council of NASPGHAN and to the PAAC Chair (the most frequent contact will be with the latter). The President of NASPGHAN will be involved in any decisions regarding salary and contract.

This RFP is for a one year contract commencing in July 2011 with options to extend at the discretion of the Executive Council of NASPGHAN.

Role and Responsibilities of NASPGHAN Washington Representative/lobbyist

Work with NASPGHAN executive committee, and especially with NASPGHAN PAAC Chairperson and members NASPGHAN staff to:
assist in the development of the PAAC action plan with milestones for the execution of the annual advocacy agenda

identify potential partners in accomplishing the agenda and attend meetings with potential partners to work on issues of common interest.

identify and monitor legislation and regulations that relate to the advocacy agenda
prepare as needed, congressional testimony, regulatory comment letters and other official communications on public policy issues in consultation with the President and the PAAC Chairperson and members

Provide reports twice yearly to the PAAC and the NASPGHAN executive council on political issues impacting annual advocacy agenda and recommend necessary refinements to strategy. These reports are to be presented at the NASPGHAN Annual Meeting and if the committee meeting is scheduled, at the Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Provide the PAAC Chairperson and members with timely updates on important activities in the Executive, Legislative, Judicial branches of government and the NIH on issues relevant either to patient or physician advocacy

Write a regular update on Washington Activities with reports and interpretation on regulations and legislation that has a direct impact on NASPGHAN members to be distributed to members

Have monthly phone conferences with the PAAC Chair

Be available for PAAC or Executive committee conference calls.

Attend meetings of the Executive committee and the PAAC twice yearly.

Ethics Policy

All employees of NASPGHAN must practice honesty and integrity in fulfilling their responsibilities and comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Qualifications

Individuals or agencies must have at least 3 years direct government affairs/public policy experience with demonstrated knowledge of Medicare physician payment and biomedical research funding issues. Previous experience as Congressional, administrative agency or medical society staff in pediatric and/or gastroenterology health-related positions is highly desirable.

7) Grassroots-PAC Manager, Public Policy and Governmental Affairs for a Global Public Accounting Firm Summary
Grant Thornton’s Public Policy and Governmental Affairs Group (Public Policy) seeks a highly-motivated Grassroots-PAC Manager to join our Washington DC Public Policy team. Assist with writing press releases, blog entries, newsletter articles, research reports, case studies, and other ITPI products
Work with partner organizations to keep them abreast of relevant privatization initiatives and field requests for assistance.
Responsible for organizing and maintaining outreach, media, communications, and other distribution lists.

Congressional Internships



The Office of Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) is seeking qualified interns for the upcoming Summer semester to serve in the Washington, D.C. office and District Offices. Applicants should have a familiarity with the legislative process, have a desire to learn while being a part of a hardworking team, and be dedicated to serving the citizens of Maryland. The Washington, D.C. intern experience is designed to immerse interns in all areas of a Congressional work environment. Outreach Internship
